For those working or recreating in Avalanche terrain in the winter, it can be easy to say, “I read the forecast, I don’t need to make my own notes about the snowpack or plan for the day.” For some people that will work out totally fine. For others, they want a little more from themselves. Personally, I think we should all be stacking the odds in our favor, and more data is better. Also, taking the time to write something down, helps you to slow down and really look at what you’re seeing in the field, an invaluable tool.
The AIARE field book is almost certainly something you’ve seen before if you’ve taken an Avalanche education course here in the States. What we’re reviewing here is the AIARE Fieldbook Cover from a small company made right in North Conway, NH, Savage Mtn Gear. Several companies have made different iterations of this product, this one is pretty darn good! I really like the zippered closure, as opposed to the velcro closure that you’ve seen on some others on the market. The problem i’ve had with the velcro closure versions is that different tools don’t always want to stay inside it very well.
Pros & Cons:
Pros:
The zippered closure keeps everything in a tight-knit package.
Plenty of room for writing utensils, a microscope, a snow card, and inclemoniter.
Denser fabric than the competition allows for more stability when working with the book.
CONS:
Slightly heavier than some competition, however, because it’s heavier it can use many of the features on my “pros” list.

Final thoughts:
Avalanche safety is important, we as an outdoor community have lost too many great people to Avalanches, even if you don’t use this book cover, then consider some avalanche education, and please recreate responsibly this winter.
A tool like this book cover is helpful, because it makes it easy to keep your AIARE field book, and all of the associated tools all in the same place that easily fits in the brain of your backpack for easy access.
