Review:
The Bullseys 25 is a streamlined pack for cragging days and light wall hauling! I’ve used the pack about 30 days over the last year, it works well for multipitch cragging days, and I find it super helpful for route development.
I find myself carrying way too much shit when I go cragging these days, mostly due to bringing various pairs of shoes, a sport and trad climbing rack with me so I have options for whatever I’m going to climb, so this isn’t the pack I’d choose for everyday regular cragging, I usually use a 45L pack for regular cragging (It looks like Savage Mtn Gear makes a 45L version of this pack, so I may need to pick one of those up!).
This pack is pretty darn perfect for objective-driven climbing, I used this for several days in Red Rocks where I was approaching a climb and rappeling back down to the base. I found it paired super well with a fanny pack for the on route nutrition and water (side note, I’ve been testing a fanny pack that Savage Mtn Gear, has been developing, but it’s not on their website yet, so stay tuned for that!).
The other major reason I’ve been using this pack is for route development, I generally hike in with a huge pack (65L), with the whole kit, drill, bolt kit, trad rack, aid rack, and a rope. I like to keep the drill and bolt kit stashed in this pack while i’m moving around the cliff and just take it out to use when I need it. I find that this keeps my harness a lot more streamline!
I did take this pack with me to Newfoundland where we were developing a new route on a remote 1000’ tall cliff, by the end of the week the pack was showing wear, but honestly after how hard I had beat on it, I’m surprised it’s still usable! My Black Diamond Stubby had a shoulder strap break off within the first year of use! The material on the bag does feel a little thinner than The Black Diamond Haul bag, but seeing as I usually use this as an auxiliary bag when hauling I’m willing to sacrifice a little to save on the weight on those long approaches!
Pros & Cons:
Pros:
Easy to setup for a quick haul.
Smaller and lighter weight than other similar packs on the market.
CONS:
A waist belt is not very useful on this size pack.
Getting ready to take off on a new route in Newfoundland, the pack has a drill, bolt kit, and water for the team.
Nitty Gritty Details:
Weight: 1.5Lb
Size: 25L
Durability:7/10
Made in the USA
Final thoughts:
Although I wouldn’t classify this bag as a one-bag quiver for all types of climbing (I don’t want to put my foot in my mouth down the line, but I don’t think that exists!) This is a great pack to have in the quiver, if you’re spending lots of time on multi-pitch routes where you rappel back to the base I’d consider it, or for those of you that do work on cliffs to develop new (especially multipitch) routes it’s an awesome tool to have in the arsenal!
