Overview:
Re-slinging cams is a right of passage once you’ve been climbing long enough, to the untrained eye, you may think that re-slinging cams is all the same everywhere, but I’m here to tell you it’s not! It’s worth noting many manufacturers like Black Diamond and Metolius offer re-slinging as a service. Which I’m sure is great! But if you’re like me and your trad rack is filled with cams, from various manufacturers then it’s worth looking at a third party that will work on all of your cams, without having to ship to various places. I’ve used two over the past year, one local to me, and the other was Runout Customs, a Moab-based company. The local shop to me took about the same time it took to ship the cams to Runout, and Runout did better work, hence why i’m highlighting them in the review here!
Cams should be re-slung every 5 years, some people push it longer than that, but I tend to stick to it, I like to have the extra piece of mind!
The cam on the left was re-slung locally, and the cam on the right was re-slung by Runout Customs.
Review:
In the past year, i’ve had cams re-slung from two different services. Recently I sent several to Runout Customs, I was super satisfied with the quality of their work, and how quickly they were delivered, I would absolutely recommend them if you need some life breathed back into your cams!
In the attached photo you can see two Green Alien cams, the left (with the nylon neon green sling) was reslung locally and measures 5.5in (140 mm), and the right cam was done by runout customs and measures 3.75in (95 mm), almost two inches shorter! For me the extra length when the cams are hanging off my harness is really annoying, so I almost never climb on those cams anymore, I just save them for that next sweet finger crack project.
Some other reasons why it’s worth considering Runout:
Two cams re-slung by Runout Customs, One with a nylon sling and the other with dyneema.
They Have a large variety of color slings on hand, in both Nylon and Dyneema
They have the ability to do a “reinforced loop” (the way most modern cams are sold) essentially all that means, is the webbing stays where it should on the cam, it can’t rotate around continuously.
The one drawback i’ll give to Runout is they don’t include a tag with the date it was re-slung (I don’t know any small companies that can offer this). I know it couldn’t include a strength rating like new cams, but just a date to keep track of when it was re-slung would be super helpful!
Pricing:
PRICES: (As of October 2024)
Nylon open loop- $9.00
Reinforced Nylon loop -$10.00
Dyneema Open Loop -$10.00
Reinforced Dyneema Loop - $11.00
Extendable Dyneema Loop - $12.00
Personally, I think that it’s worth splurging for the reinforced loops, it’s worth the extra dollar!
