Review:
The same carabiner you know and love from the sport crags, but made to pair with popular cam color schemes. The Spirit Carabiner lineup got revisited in 2023, and I’m here for it! While I wouldn’t tell you the changes are revolutionary enough that you should go replace your sport draws immediately, I think it’s worth considering looking at the Spirit 6-Pack! I’m no longer at a point in my life where I’m gram-counting what’s on my rack to save every ounce possible, I’m willing to take on a little more weight for the added usability when I’m clipping a piece. That’s partially because most of my climbing has been focused on hard single and multi-pitch routes, I’ve been less focused on long alpine routes as of recently.
Pros & Cons:
Pros:
Solid gate for clipping.
Plenty of room for clove hitching into pieces
CONS:
Slightly heavier than some competition
Nitty Gritty Details:
Weight: 37g (per carabiner)
Material: Aluminum
Durability:8/10
The competition:
There are lots of different options for rack packs on the market, and all of them will work! I made a little Excel sheet below that compares some options from the market. For me, I knew that I didn’t want a hook-nose carabiner, so I grayed all of those out off the bat. Although the Oz Carabiner, Trango Quantum, and Trango Vector are hooded or partially hooded carabiners I’m ignoring those because the hooded is problematic to me, because it can be challenging to get clove hitches off after they have been loaded. So to me that left the five remaining (white backgrounds in the Excel sheet below) rack packs that were really in consideration for me.
Of the wire gate options remaining, the Dyon seems to win out due to the fact it weighs the least and the price is amongst the cheapest in that category (personally, I’d love to see Petzl come out with an Ange-L Rack pack!). For the solid gate options that leave us with the Edelrid Mission vs the Spirit, the mission is lighter and about the same size, so that is likely the best in the category, but unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to climb on it yet. I went with the Spirit rack pack, really due to the fact I was already ordering some other stuff from Petzl, so it was easy to just add them to the cart!
Final thoughts:
Racking carabiners are a very personal choice, and I won’t judge you for what you choose. Unless you choose to have mismatched carabiners on your cams, that shit drives me crazy, and I’ll probably never climb with you again.
